A Beach Day in Winter

I picked up surfing two summers ago. With one lesson and each weekend going during the summer, my junior newbie status feels now like a newbie status. It's hard, but it's one of the few things I'll just keep doing. An itch? There is definitely something indescribable when you catch a wave.

Like most people when I think of the beach I think of salt on my lips and drinking cold cola under the sun. I've never actually step foot on it during the winter months of New York. I went on a Saturday where the surf report slated 5-7ft waves with offshore winds. It sounded like a good field trip to Rockaway Beach with the camera.

I will warn to dress warm. It sounds obvious but the beach is just as beautiful during the winter as is in summer. Dress warm because believe it or not you might want to stay longer than you intended. The waves were beautiful that day and for the surfers that bravely ventured out they were inspiring for this newbie. It can be done.

If you're looking for a great bite I recommend Uma's. Get off the Beach 90 Street stop off the A train if you commute. With Uzbekistan dishes you can't go wrong warming up with their flavorful soups! I tried the Lagman with noodles, beef, and vegetables. The server offered a side of chili paste and it sealed the deal, and for dessert check out their specials. A warm chocolate brownie with raspberry put a big smile on my face. It was the perfect comfort food for a good beach day.

Be sure to follow Uma's on Facebook for updates and pictures! If you're also thinking about learning to surf, do it!
