Located in The Bushwick Collective, step into a new joint to relax and indulge. Chicha, focusing on Nicaraguan drinks and food, will be you're favorite spot if you love comfort food. I always hear about the beautiful beaches and surfing in Nicaragua, but eating at Chicha gave me another reason to visit the country.
The phrase, eyes bigger than the stomach, will be worth it! Earlier that day I did head out to Rockaway to surf. Arriving to Chicha with an empty stomach was every foodie's dream.
For starters, grab the fried yuca with cilantro aioli. These are little balls of joy in your mouth, fried but not greasy! Soft and just the right temperature to pop in and not burn your tongue. Also, there's a surprise at the end of the bowl, cilantro aioli that's perfect for dipping.
If fried is not your thing, the guacamole with fried plantain chips are a must, too. What did catch my eye was the pipián, a vegetable grown in Nicaragua that is a variety of pumpkin, thinly sliced with chimichurri sauce will make any meat lover approve.
On the menu you'll also see a section for quesillos. These are street snacks found in Nicaragua. No spoiler alert, you'll have to see the options for yourself. I can tell you they make their own homemade tortillas and cheese! If you ask, you'll learn a lot of the ingredients are homemade at the restaurant.
Next up are the entrées! The churrasco and the baho-style pork are both mouthwatering with the first look. The pork is steamed, served with crunchy rice to give extra texture, and garnished with beautiful long banana leaves. The churrasco is perfectly marinated and cooked not well done with crunchy taro root to crunch up and dip. There will be no judgment if you choose to eat with your hands.
I should mention that Chicha is a perfect spot for all RUM drinkers! All the cocktails are crafted beautifully and pair well with the different dishes. If you're like me, and not much of a drinker, there are refreshing mocktail twists to try, too!
And while all good things must come to an end, don't skip on the maduros inferno, fried plantain wrapped in churro topped with ice cream and spun sugar. Why inferno? Rum is also served on the plate and when your server comes with a lighter, you guessed it, it's an inferno heaven.
The next time you're in Bushwick, and taking pictures next to the iconic street art, stop by Chicha for a drink, street snack, or two. You will be happy not to have to missed it.
